This past month, CYC's Cruising Sail Fleet and Power Fleet hosted the annual Bilge Auction at CYC's Belmont Station to benefit the Sea Scout Ship 5870 Privateer. The event, led by CYCF President and masterful auctioneer Greg Miarecki, raised more than $15,000 with enthusiastic participation from nearly 100 attendees.
One of the event highlights included the opportunity to sponsor Sea Scouts experiences during the 2024 season. Captain Sonny Lisowski secured the $2,200 sponsorship for the Christmas Tree Ship hot chocolate and refreshments booth. Chicago's Christmas Ship project, a beloved tradition, allows the Sea Scouts to volunteer and help deliver Christmas trees to Chicago families in need.
CYC Commodore Chuck Anderson won the $1,200 sponsorship for the Scouts' long cruise across Lake Michigan, and Bilge Auction Chair Jerry and Shelby Gurthet sponsored CPR and first aid training for $1,100.
Other notable auction items included two Cubs tickets with Catalina Club access, won by Frank Ten Brink for $700, two nights at a slip in New Buffalo, claimed by Tom Falck for $450, and an unforgettable cruise aboard Captain Sonny's powerboat Mirage for fireworks and dinner at CYC, secured by Jill Biringer for $800.
The funds raised will significantly enhance the Sea Scouts' programs, ensuring continued on- and off- water learning and adventure opportunities for the students in the Chicagoland area involved. The event success truly exemplifies our community spirit and generosity, all in support of the invaluable Sea Scouts program.
