From the Helm

The boats may be out of the water, but it’s been a busy month at your Chicago Yacht Club Foundation.
Earlier this month, we hosted youth from Rickover Academy and BUILD Chicago at Monroe Station for an information session about our 2023 Maritime Academy.
Our after school educational programs are now in full swing, with youth from multiple organizations learning about STEM subjects through the lens of boating in our Captain’s Cabin. And we are in full scale planning mode for 2023.
Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Chicago Regatta donors, and building on our successful initial efforts this year, we are planning to offer five different community sailing camps in 2023. We’re working with various community partners to make all of this – and much more – happen in 2023.
I know you will enjoy this month’s Beacon. In this issue, we’re featuring our Sea Scout Ship Privateer. Privateer is the oldest Sea Scout ship in the nation, and the youth in our program this year are making us all proud. Read more about Thomas, Stella, and their colleagues below. And we’re also honored to bring you a Donor Spotlight featuring Lisa Curcio Gaston, who will become the 71st Commodore of the Chicago Yacht Club in January. We are excited to work with Lisa and her outstanding team in the coming year.
November is a month of gratitude, and on behalf of everyone at the Foundation, I want to extend a sincere thanks to all of our friends and donors who have supported the Foundation at unprecedented levels in 2022. I hope you will join us for our First Annual Meet the Kids Night on Tuesday, November 29th. Come enjoy a great buffet from Chef Larry and hear from a number of the youth who have benefited from your support. We’re very excited to show you the impact that you have made! Let’s continue doing big things. Together.
