Charting with the Sea Scouts

May 25, 2023

At a Sea Scout meeting last month, ten members of the Sea Scout Ship Privateer learned about seamanship and navigation from a true expert: Jarrik Mitchell, veteran of the U.S. Navy and husband of Foundation Secretary Erin Mitchell. Jarrik’s family connection to the Foundation and his life experience made him the perfect leader for the session, held April 18 at CYC’s Monroe Station. “I fell in love with the Navy when I was very young,” said Jarrik, “So I know what it’s like to be young and excited by being on the water with all the amazing lessons you can learn and experiences you can have.” He turned that love for the Navy into a distinguished career, serving as navigator of a guided missile destroyer, then squadron navigator of Destroyer Squadron 22, and navigating six U.S. Navy ships and 16 NATO ships across the Atlantic Ocean and North Sea.

Ten Scouts participated in the seminar, which began with an introduction to nautical charts: how to obtain charts and select the right one, updating the chart according to the latest notice to mariners, and starting to plot a course. The Scouts then followed Jarrik’s instruction in how to properly label the chart, plan a transit, and plot a track, while Jarrik shared a few sea stories along the way. "I found it especially interesting when he told the story of how the equipment went out on their ship and they had to use their navigation skills in real time," said Stella, one of the participating Scouts.

Next, the group learned how to use various aids and tools to determine a fix and properly plot and record position. To end the day, the Scouts applied their new skills to plan a potential real-life transit out of Belmont Harbor to the William E. Dever Crib, then south to Monroe Harbor with a brief stop at Navy Pier; ideally, a trip they will sail this summer.

Scouts found the session enjoyable and educational. "The class was interesting and thoughtful, and he shared fun stories and lessons that gave us a good idea of how the Navy navigates their boats," said Luke, a participating Scout. "The exercises were also engaging and helped us to understand the concepts."

“I hope I was able to impart some navigation knowledge to the Sea Scouts, but even more, I hope I was able to impart my love of the sea and appreciation for what a difference the water and a career on the water has meant to me,” said Jarrik. “It may have been just a short class, but for me, it was an honor to teach them and share with them. I am proud to help the Foundation in its support of this group!”
